Saddles Saddlecloths Saltbags
Orientgalerie Reto Christoffel
Camel, horse and donkey are vital for the nomad of the steppe's peripheral areas. They are pack animals as well as mounts, often both at the same time. Especially the horse is of outstanding importance since it also adds to the glory of the man. The agility of the horseman in the mastery of the ride invigorates the nomad's virility. He regards himself as grand victor in the celerity of the fleet-footed, Turkmen horse. Hence, as the saying has it: "A Turkmen on a horse doesn't anymore remember his mother!"
The nomad's wives know about their husbands' feelings. That is why they are eager to knot and weave to their honour, as a wedding present, saddlecloths and saddlerugs. The more beautiful, delicate, colourful, extravagant, decorated and expressive their making, the greater the rider's gratitude for the fabulous fitting of his favourite horse, with which, splendidly adorned, he proudly presents himself.
